St. Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir UPDATE  FEBRUARY 2016

IMPORTANT NOTICE

We will practise on Monday 1st February with the Orchestra at 8pm in the church.
Please allow time to grab your music from upstairs before coming down for a prompt start. The
Tuesday 2nd February practice is CANCELLED.
Please mention this to other Choir Members whenever you see them as a reminder!

31st January Coffee Morning

Cakes, cakes, please, please, as before. I'll sort the bacon and sausages, and the cooking of them as Ken is not able to be present. Jeannette is away in New Zealand for her son's marriage, so a little more help than usual is needed to make the morning a success please!

It is possible our Coffee Morning will be cancelled on 29th May as it is Corpus Christi. More in due course.

6th March 11:30 Poly Mass

The music is now up on our Web site HERE.

Triduum 2016

As you aware, we have Maundy Thursday with the Plainchant Choir at 8pm this year (a return to something that was a long-standing tradition at Bart's for many years) in addition to Good Friday 3pm and The Easter Vigil at 8.30pm.

Congratulations!

Another Windsor Grandchild, Nicholas Gerard Edwin Timothy to Geraldine and James, born on 24th January, 10 weeks early, 3lb 7oz. Mother and baby doing well.

The 2016 singing workshop

Unfortunately I have been told that Saturday 9th April is the Parish's Annual Grand National bash in the hall - best laid plans, and all that. Most of the Parish horse racing fans are likely to be potentially, possibly interested in singing; whatever, the noise whilst we are trying to sing! That and the fact that we can hardly offer a Cream Tea in the church. Ho hum: I guess I'll sponsor a race in the Poly Choir's name again, and maybe a horse.... I am now looking at Saturday 7th May, and will let you know in a couple of weeks or so.

Ven. Pius XII wrote in his encyclical Mediator Dei:

62. Assuredly it is a wise and most laudable thing to return in spirit and affection to the sources of the sacred liturgy. For research in this field of study, by tracing it back to its origins, contributes valuable assistance towards a more thorough and careful investigation of the significance of feast-days, and of the meaning of the texts and sacred ceremonies employed on their occasion. But it is neither wise nor laudable to reduce everything to antiquity by every possible device. Thus, to cite some instances, one would be straying from the straight path were he to wish the altar restored to its primitive table-form; were he to want black excluded as a colour for the liturgical vestments; were he to forbid the use of sacred images and statues in Churches; were he to order the crucifix so designed that the divine Redeemer’s body shows no trace of His cruel sufferings; and lastly were he to disdain and reject polyphonic music or singing in parts, even where it conforms to regulations issued by the Holy See.

Mediator Dei, November 1947

Plainchant Choir

Please remember the reinstated monthly practice for February's Mass takes place at 7.30pm promptly on Tuesday 16 February for the following Sunday's Mass.

Prayers, please.....

For George Meyern, George Norton, Christine and Eugene, Maria & Family, Anne Mitra, Mary & Frank Elliott, Madeleine and her husband and a Choir member's special intention. Please also remember Ken's mother and Jeannette's mother in your prayers at this time.

For your coffee breaks

Spem in Alium with a few well-known faces featuring among the eight choirs needed for the performance of Tallis's motet.

Diamond Geezer goes to Rome - just click on "click for Newer posts" at the bottom left of each entry for the next in the short series of observations. Also Wassail! I never realised a healthy apple drink was behind it all!!

Amazing Anamorphic Illusions.

Streatham's ABC Regal in 1949 and Streatham Carnival in the 1960s

How well do we know Pope Francis on the subject of Ecology - this is wonderful especially the ending!

The Tilt Test.

The WW2 bunker at Clapham South is to open for tours, Ian Visits reports. CADPLAN released a deep level scan of the shelter last December.

For those of us with an Oyster Card that allows free travel, Diamond Geezer points out just how far we oldies can now travel for free!

Croydon, as you've never seen it before, and then back to earth with a trip with the driver on a fast train running from East Croydon to Victoria.

And finally... two young people showing extraordinary musical prowess. A young Japanese girl plays a Star Wars selection with two hands and two feet; close your eyes and you'll realise that she is playing the entire orchestration. The second is an even-younger percussionist playing the Can Can with the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra..... with such thoroughly overwhelming enthusiasm!!
